Yes, that Walgreens. No, I never knew such a thing existed either. But this is a very special Walgreens and when I say they have everything I mean EVERYTHING!

On a recent trip to Chicago, I found myself at the corner of “Happy & Healthy,” or in this case Randolph and State Streets, in front of by far the largest, most impressive Walgreens I have ever seen. Before I even get to the wine tasting let me explain the other highlights of this massive, two-story flagship location.
They have a department store quality cosmetics section, a nail salon, a juice bar, a sushi bar, a grocery store, an entire liquor store featuring a Virtual Bartender with touch screen technology that helps you find cocktail recipes based on preference of liquor and.. oh yeah…a healthcare clinic and pharmacy.

And then there was the wine bar.
On this particular afternoon they were having a wine tasting featuring several wines from South Africa imported by Blue Crane Imports, a Chicago based imported and distributor.
We tasted wines from Catherine Marshall, Stony Brook Vineyards, and Whale Pod.
Catherine Marshall 2011 sauvignon blanc – Crisp and clean with flavors of passion fruit and mango with a citrus finish.
Stony Brook Vineyards The “J” 2012 – A light, refreshing, and fragrant blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 32% Viognier, and 8% Semillon. Loved it!!
Whale Pod Syrah – A nicely priced ($18) syrah and merlot blend with rich and juicy flavor.
Being able to buy some deodorant, get a manicure, and have a wine tasting all in one place…I’ll drink to that!
